I just got some bad news...
Rex just got to his house and called me... 3 of our 4 hens and our duck were killed today by a fox or dog. I am just so sad I can't believe it. The fox or dog got into the chicken coop by digging under the fence and the girls just had no chance. I don't know what scared him away from the other hen but I'm glad we at least have her. George (the rooster) was up in the rafters, so he was safe - roosters always get to the highest spot when there is any danger or it's dark out. I just can't believe they're gone... Rex is so torn up over it...
Anyway, just wanted to... I feel sooo... Aaaarrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhh!!! Talk with ya later,
Sheryl
I am so sorry, SHeryl. I have been dealing with the same thing since I sold off my goat herd. The goats sort of protected the hens who shared the barn with them. Then since there no more goats, my lovely flock of about 20 is down to 2 hens. They even got the roosters!! I was SO bummed out! So I know how you feel!

Im so sorry that happened to you. When I was little we had a big ole flock of chickens and one night the neighbors dog broke in while they were sleeping and killed all of them. Its terrible and I hope you and Rex will be ok, I loved our chickens, had them since they were chicks and you could even hold them (((Sheryl)))

Thanks for the hugs Darc,
It means a lot that ya'll understand... I had never had any pets besides dogs and cats so this is all new to me... I didn't even imagine a fox or dog would dig under the fencing. When Rex and I get married we're moving them over to my house, so I told him that we need to dig a deep trench around where we're going to put the coop and bury part of the fencing. I also told him that we'll have to put 2 fences up so the chicks will be doubly safe... lol! He thinks I'm silly but I just can't think about that happening again. I get so darned attached. Rex and I picked them out and raised them from chicks so they were real friendly and we could hold them and hug on them lots.
Anyway, thanks again girl!

Thanks Connie,
I guess this is more common than I knew... I just didn't even think about it at all... Like I said, I'm trying to get country-fied... lol! I need an owners manual for small time raising of chickens. Gives new meaning to "Chicken soup for the soul"... oh, that was bad!
Have a good night!
